Deceptive DZ Tactics
While our sport is fortunate to have so many quality drop zones who offer quality skydives, tandems, and student programs, sad to say, there are also a few Web sites that are claiming to be the local DZ in your metropolitan areas, when they are not.
The web site names give the impression that the DZ is no more than an hour away. Most do not give a physical address on the Web site or list any staff members. Many of the Web sites look the same regardless of what state they claim to be in. The Web sites are vague as to the actual location of the drop zone. Visitors are encouraged to call the toll free number listed.
For anyone that may want to do business with this or any drop zone, you should definitely verify the actual location of the DZ and how far it is from you. In addition confirm the actual business name and try to confirm if they are registered to do business in the state they claim to be in. Do this even if the people on the phone try to convince you otherwise.
You will likely be quoted a very attractive price of around $165. Unfortunately they will no clarify that once you arrive at an actual drop zone there are additional charges which they call "port fees" and a variety of other names which will increase the price substantially. You will not know by how much until you arrive. You may also find that once your arrive you will jumping from a much smaller airplane that appears on or is advertised on the Web site and that if you want to jump from higher altitudes that there is an additional charge. If you decide to make a jump there and give a credit card number for a deposit, be aware that the deposit is probably non-refundable.
