In The Beginning
Skydiving at Pepperell Airport began in the late 1960’s. The first commercial drop zone at Pepperell was opened in 1971 by Ted Strong of Strong Enterprises. Over the years a number of other owners kept the skydiving business going.
The Legacy of Fast Frannie
Athena Fran Strimenos first discovered skydiving with her best friend in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where adventure quickly became a way of life. More often than not, she would skip school to spend her days jumping over the island, landing in the ocean, dropping her gear, swimming ashore, grabbing snorkeling equipment, diving for her parachute, and doing it all over again. Even then, skydiving was never just a hobby to Fran; it was freedom, passion, and the beginning of a lifelong journey in the sky.
In the 1970s, Fran moved back to the United States to attend university, where fate led her to meet legendary skydiving pioneer Ted Strong & Dan Pointer, who was just beginning operations at what would become Skydive Pepperell. At only 17 years old, Fran was technically too young to jump, but Ted told her that if she could get a notarized note from her mother, she could skydive. She did, and became the very first person to ever jump here out of a Cessna at Skydive Pepperell.
What began as a young woman chasing adventure eventually became a lifelong legacy. In 1990, Fran took over ownership of the dropzone, and for more than three decades it has remained a proudly woman-owned and operated business under Athena Fran Strimenos, lovingly known throughout the skydiving community as “Fast Frannie.”
Over the years, Fran transformed the dropzone into far more than a business. She raised her children in a nursery beside the hangar, welcomed generations of jumpers into the sport, and built a close-knit community that feels more like family than customers. Countless lifelong friendships, relationships, and unforgettable memories have been formed here because of the atmosphere she created, one rooted in adventure, resilience, warmth, and belonging.
What began with Fran chasing adventure eventually became a multigenerational legacy. Her children grew up on the dropzone, and years later, one of her daughters followed in her footsteps to become an AFF Instructor. The very first student she ever guided through the skies was her own brother, a powerful reflection of the family, trust, and lifelong bonds built here over generations.
Today, Fran’s continues to welcome new generations into the sky through aircraft takeoff, every first jump, every nervous smile turned into excitement, and every person who finds confidence through skydiving. Her story is one of fearless adventure, determination, and community, a reminder that sometimes the people bold enough to chase the sky end up building something that inspires generations beneath it.
Present Day
In 1990, the current owner began running the operation, and soon after, Skydive Pepperell obtained a 22-place Twin Otter aircraft on a seasonal basis. In the early years of turbine skydiving, one of the local jumpers worked for a company that operated Twin Otter aircraft and helped arrange for the plane to be used for weekend jump operations at Skydive Pepperell. This made Skydive Pepperell the first dropzone to use a Twin Otter aircraft for skydiving operations, becoming a major milestone in both the dropzone’s history and the evolution of modern skydiving.
The 60+ acre airport has been attentively groomed to provide a lush grassy landing area that is flat and free of obstacles. The Parachute Shop, which is located on-site, provides a climate controlled rigging loft and gear store for jumper convenience.
The dropzone is open seven days per week May through October. During other times of the year, the dropzone may be open dependent on weather.
PAC 750XL
Continuing its tradition of operating innovative jump aircraft, Skydive Pepperell purchased a PAC 750 XL in 2022. The PAC 750 was created in the late 1990’s by Pacific Aerospace Corporation (PAC). The PAC 750 was one of the first airplanes specifically engineered to meet the demands of skydiving operations, blending powerful performance with unparalleled safety features. Equipped with state-of-the-art avionics and safety systems, the PAC 750 represents the pinnacle of modern aerospace technology, ensuring that every jump is not just an adventure, but an unforgettable experience. Today, the PAC 750 XL helps provide an exciting and efficient experience for both first-time tandem students and experienced jumpers alike.
